With PlayStation 4 and many new games waiting to be revealed, E3 2013 promises to be a slam-bang explosion of excitement. So take a stroll down memory lane with us and enjoy the electrifying highlights from previous Sony Computer Entertainment E3 conferences.

1995 – The start of something special

The first ever Electronic Entertainment Expo – or E3, as it’s more commonly known – staged the very first PlayStation system. This spectacular debut was made with Namco’s iconic racing title Ridge Racer, promising to drive its breathless arcade experience straight into your living room.

1996 – Video games step up to the next level

Big games and big names became the highlight of E3 in 1996, as juggernaut series Tomb RaiderRESIDENT EVILTEKKEN 2 and FINAL FANTASY VII all made the original PlayStation an essential system. Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot also span onto the scene, becoming a popular Sony Computer Entertainment mascot in the process.

1997 – “Snake? Snake!”

As E3 sneaked over from Los Angeles to Atlanta, Solid Snake crept back onto the video game scene with Metal Gear Solid on PlayStation. Revealed via a short trailer, there was no doubt Konami’s innovative stealth title stole the show.

1998 – Driving ambitions

The Real Driving Simulator Gran Turismo sped off with all the attention in 1998, offering eye-popping visuals and the most realistic handling ever experienced in a racing game. Other new titles caused a stir, including Syphon Filter and Silent Hill, making sure E3’s last time at Atlanta was one to remember.

1999 – A legend in the making

Sony Computer Entertainment turned up the heat in sunny Los Angeles with a stunning demonstration of PlayStation 2. No one knew back then that this new kid on the block would end up being the best-selling video game system of all time, but the seeds of the future were planted with a striking playable demo of Gran Turismo 2000 and a real-time demo of FINAL FANTASY VIII‘s famous ballroom scene.

2000 – Son of a Snake

Solid Snake was on everyone’s lips again, as Konami revealed its PS2 sequel, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It was a dramatic demonstration of the system’s power as well as offering a glimpse into the sort of detailed and engaging gameplay experiences we would all be enjoying in the near future.

2001 – Nothing but the hits

E3 2001 was where the promise of PS2 became reality. Future classics were born in the shape of FINAL FANTASY XGrand Theft Auto 3Jak and Daxter: The Precursor LegacyDevil May Cry and ICO.

2002 – PS2 rises to the occasion

PS2 solidified its dominance with a showing of great sequels and intriguing new exclusives. Between Ratchet & ClankKingdom HeartsSly Raccoon and The Getaway, PS2 picked up a variety of awards from games journalists across the globe.

2003 – A breathtaking showcase

E3 is known for its surprises, although 2003 literally left audiences speechless with the announcement of PSP. After Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Kazuo Hirai warmed up the crowd with a fantastic Gran Turismo 4 trailer on PS2, then Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi delivered the knockout blow by revealing a portable system that featured remarkable visuals and the ability to play movies and music on the move.

2004 – Portable power

With PSP fresh in everybody’s minds, the portable powerhouse showed everyone what it could do with titles such as WipEout PureMetal Gear Acid and MediEvil: Resurrection. PS2 snatched some of the limelight as well, with the now legendary God of War revealing itself for the first time.

2005 – Three is the magic number

PlayStation 3 exploded into life with dazzling demos, High Definition visuals and the ability to play Blu-ray Discs. However, it was the games which captured imaginations. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Killzone 2 and Heavenly Sword were just three of the many outstanding titles on display.

2006 – A peek behind the PS3 curtain

With excitement building towards its eventual release, PS3 went on to charm all comers with playable versions of titles such as WarhawkMotorStorm and Resistance: Fall of Man. The future looked bright with the announcement of games including the award-winning Assassin’s Creed and the first glimpse of a tech demo called The Casting, which evolved into the hit adventure, Heavy Rain.

2007 – Sackboy comes to town

Scaling back down to Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, E3 still packed a punch despite its smaller size. Classic series in the making were brought out to play, with LittleBigPlanetbecoming an instant smash, alongside a big appearance from new adventure hero Nathan Drake in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Everybody’s favourite Lombax and robot duo made a triumphant return with Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, while Silent Hill Homecoming sent a shiver down spines with a short teaser trailer.

2008 – Something for everybody

E3 returned to downtown LA and kept its small scale but that didn’t stop the games from flowing. While Sackboy joined Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton on stage during the conference, the likes of Resistance 2MotorStorm Pacific Rift and God of War III joined the PlayStation 3 system’s bulging games catalogue.

2009 – Moving towards the future

2010 – New ways to play games
