The pretty spectacular run of the team of South Africans in the World Nation’s Cup has sadly come to an end.
The team – which only got itself together and registered around 24 hours before the deadline for entries – had a run in the group stages marked with highs (a win against the reigning champs France) and lows (a loss to the UK team), but made the knockout stages with a whitewash over the Ukraine team.
Facing Italy last night (Thursday 28 February) in an effort to secure a place in the last eight of the tournament, the match was always going to be a tough one. The Italian team is a quality side, but the South Africans did not plan to go down without a fight. Pushing the Italians to within two tickets in one round, showed the true grit and fighting quality for which all South African sports teams are known for. In the end however, the Italian’s experience held the advantage and they took the match 2-0.
While we’re pretty sure the players of Team South Africa feel a little deflated, they should all really take a bow. We’re pretty sure we speak for all when we say you made the console Battlefield 3 community proud.
You guys have a year to practice now. You’ll take it in 2014.
