Astro Gaming Cup South Africa | Day 3 Recap

Day three of the Astro Gaming Cup was finals day, and also a day of great thrills and plays from all four teams.

3rd/4th Playoff

The third and fourth place playoff saw Team Adept and ViNCO Gaming face off in a best of five series where one team would secure R4,000 and Astro gear, while the other would walk off completely empty handed.

Team Adept had secured two victories in the group stages, and only saw themselves playing for third spot due to a 3-1 loss to Energy eSports in the semi-final. ViNCO’s route was not quite as glamorous with the team losing all their matches previously while only securing one map win in their first match of the tournament.

The final day was no kinder to the team in yellow as Team Adept steamrolled their opponents to secure a 3-0 win and third spot.

The finals featured the familiar match up of Carbon Astra and eN_F34R playing for the big prize of R10,000 and Astro A40 TR Headsets or the R6,000 and Astro gear up for grabs for second.

The match certainly didn’t disappoint, and the team from Energy eSports came out fighting as they dominated their opponents from Carbon eSports in the Hardpoint.

Carbon Astra fought back and snapped SnD by the narrowest of margins at 6-5. Uplink on Fringe saw the Astra team sweep aside their opponents 11-1 to take a 2-1 series lead heading into Capture the Flag. Overtime was needed to separate the two teams, and it was the Energy team that brought things all square and on to the fifth map.

Stronghold hosted Search and Destroy and the expectation was that the map would go all 11 rounds. It did just about get that close when Astra secured the map with a 6-4 win and the first place spot in a match that was another great advert for the South African console competitive scene.
