Alan Wake delay explained…

Well, not really, but there is an explanation for at least 6 months of the delay.

There was a 6 month period where the game was being developed as an open-world, sandbox game.  This is according to Remedy managing director Matias Myllyrinne.  Myllyrinne further admitted that it would have been a bad decision to stick with the open-world Alan Wake.

“When a player turns up in a monster truck to a love scene, you know you’re doing something wrong,” he said.

Obviously, an open-world would’ve had a negative effect on the story and how the action unfolded, which by all accounts is critical to the title.  So after six months and several million dollars of development, it was decided to scrap the open-world approach in favour of a more tightly controlled, linear experience.  Will it be the right decision?  We’ll have to wait to see.

Alan Wake is scheduled for release (over the seas) on May 21, only on Xbox 360.
