Submissions are open for the 2020 MTN App of the Year Awards. This year marks the ninth year of the awards which is the “champion of app development in South Africa; celebrating local talent and out-of-the-box thinkers that drive disruption and change.”

If you are a budding or established developer, the awards offer the perfect opportunity to expose your work to a wider audience, while potentially being rewarded for your work. Apps can be submitted for a variety of categories, with gaming being the one closest to our heart. As gamers (and as one of the awards previous judges), we would love to see more gaming applications submitted. The Gaming Solution category made its first appearance in 2017, and in 2018 the ACGL’s app walked away as the category winner.

This year sees the addition of a new ‘Youth’ category, which will require developers to be between the ages of 18 and 26 years old.

Winners can expect an “an array of great prizes, massive media exposure and publicity to all of our entrants, finalists and winners.” Previous overall winners include SnapScan, Zapper, WumDrop, Eskom se Push, DSTV Now, Naked Insurance and others.

Submissions close 29 September 2020, with the winners traditionally announced the following month. With COVID-19 playing havoc with gatherings, it remains to be seen whether the gala awards ceremony will be a live event or a digital one.

We really do encourage any local developers with an app to consider entering the awards. There are plenty of opportunities to get your app in the hands of potential investors or other role-players via the awards, and may just lead to a life-changing connection.
