So I finally got my hands on Assassins Creed 2, and it proved another one of my hedonistic theories. You see I have had a long standing theory that #2 in the series is “always” the best. This might not be the case with all series’, but I have found it with many.
The first Assassins Creed as we all know, was a beautiful fling that could not withstand a relationship as it lacked in variety- the “true spice of life.” It was impressive at first glance, stunningly detailed and it took gamers in a different direction with its controls and gameplay. An absolute must play for gamers alike. But once you had put in a few hours and the shine wore off, it became much of the same.
So it is good to see that Ubisoft took in all the criticism they received from their first attempt and it looks like they did a stellar job of giving us the game the first could was not and always wanted to be. Even though I have only put in enough hours to say that I am or am not enjoying it, I am totally hooked, day-dreaming about when I can return to ancient Italy. I have experienced so much variety already and that combined with the new features of the game has me totally begging for more where the first title had me begging… for another game.
I believe that often developers will iron out the kinks, correct where they might have gone wrong and if the game was good to start with, the don’t venture too far from the formula that made their first attempt grab your attention in the first place.
By the third and more often they go in new directions all together, try to re-invent the wheel so to speak, go all out and often loose the magic that made us a fan in the first place. So while again I say this is not with all series’ you should according to me, always buy the first sequel as it often proves to be the ticket.
